Delaware and Lehigh Heritage Corridor Market Towns
- White Haven, Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Palmerton, Slatington
The Market Towns Initiative is a pilot program that partners the National Heritage Corridor Commission with Pennsylvania Downtown Center, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to enrich the market town communities.
The market towns along the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor are White Haven, Lansford, Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Palmerton and Slatington. One of the most important assets of these towns is their historic architecture. Over the years, some insensitive alterations have been made to commercial building facades in the market towns along the corridor.
In 2002, HC worked with D&L to published an illustrated hands-on booklet that covers architectural styles prevalent in the towns and how to preserve and improve the aesthetics of downtown areas by using appropriate architectural details including signs, lighting, windows, doors and exterior materials. The purpose of the design guidelines is to help to revitalize the main streets and downtown commercial areas of these towns by enhancing and preserving their historic architecture.
A Heritage Parks Program Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources provided funding for the publication.
