Heritage Conservancy is thrilled to announce that the Neshaminy Creek has been nominated for Pennsylvania’s 2015 River of the Year. Each year, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources partners with the Pennsylvania Organization of Watersheds and Rivers to crown a River of the Year. The public is invited to vote online, choosing from among five waterways nominated across the state. As the only waterway nominated from southeastern Pennsylvania, the Neshaminy Creek Corridor needs everyone in the community to rally around this integral natural resource.

Propelling its way through approximately 40 miles and spanning both Montgomery and Bucks counties, the Neshaminy Creek is a defining feature of our region. More broadly, the Neshaminy Creek watershed covers an area of approximately 236 square miles and is a tributary to the Delaware River, which supplies water to five percent of the nation’s population — over 15 million people.

In addition to its ecological significance, the Neshaminy Creek is also treasured as a recreational resource by many for its fishing, kayaking, bird watching and hiking opportunities. The corridor is highlighted as an official segment of the Circuit, a 750-mile network of bicycle and pedestrian trails in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Bucks County, its municipalities, and civic groups and nonprofits such as Heritage Conservancy, are working collaboratively to make plans for the trail a reality.

A $10,000 grant will be awarded to the nominating organization of the winning waterway. If the Neshaminy Creek prevails, Heritage Conservancy will host a year-round slate of educational and recreational activities, including a paddling trips, workshops, and environmental improvements.

For hundreds of thousands of local residents, enhancing and preserving the Neshaminy’s water quality is a critical component of a healthy, sustainable, livable community. Help raise awareness for the Neshaminy Creek and its conservation needs! Voting is simple.
